Emerging infectious diseases represent a significant world-wide threat to public health. This broad category encompasses diseases which are newly discovered and characterized (Hepatitis C, E. coli- 0157:H7), diseases which have re-emerged after a period of low activity (West Nile Virus, Yellow Fever Virus), and diseases which may be purposely introduced into a population (bioterrorism- smallpox/monkeypox, anthrax). With the exception of smallpox, many of these diseases affect great numbers of people in the developing world. There is, however, an increasing inter-relatedness between diseases considered endemic in foreign countries and emergence of these disease in North America. Two examples of this trend include recent outbreaks of West Nile Virus and monkeypox in the United States
NTI is dedicated to developing rapid diagnostic assays and vaccines for these diseases utilizing our proprietary diagnostics and vaccine development platforms.
